Selkie 2021 Found Stone
Working in stone has developed my interest in suggestive forms referencing figures and the landscape. The organic and hard-edged angular shapes interlocked together evoke a sense the body or landscape between states of movement and rest.
Carving is a slow process. I like to take my time with a work, allowing the stones character to inform the form of each piece. The two main stones I use are Soapstone and Serpentine, both have their own unique qualities. Using hand tools, I feel my way around the surface of the stone as I carve. The process is very meditative and reflective.
